Today I want to write about Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. He's a hero and a reformer. After the Great War the Ottoman Empier's situation was rather awful. Mustafa Kemal objected to the Sultan and in November 1920 he abolished Sultan Mehmed VI and he became the first president of the Republic of Turkey.
Atatürk implemented a lot of reforms for example :
- he moved the capital city to Ankara
- he introduced the Gregorian calender, the Latin alphabet and he implemented surnames
- he introduced compulsory education for women
For himself Mustafa Kemal chosed a name "Atatürk" (father of Turks) and no one is allowed to wear this surname.
The Turks really love him. In Turkey it is rude to say something wrong about him. Children learn songs and poems about Atatürk in schools .
